The Czech Center New York and the Czech Center London are pleased to announce that Bruce Bybee is the winner of this year’s Susanna Roth Award for the Anglophone territories.
Now in its 11th year, the annual competition invited young translators to take on an extended excerpt from Lover/Fighter (Dokořán, 2024), the new book by Kristina Hamplová. This edition marked the first time participants from both the United States and the United Kingdom were eligible to submit English translations and compete for the award in the Anglophone regions.
The winning translation was selected by an independent jury of experts: Professor Chris Harwood of Columbia University, Professor James Partridge of Charles University, and translator Isabel Stainsby.
The main prize includes a multi-day trip to the Czech Republic, featuring active participation in professional seminars. The competition is supported by the Czech Literary Centre and the Czech Centers.

Bruce Bybee (b. 1999) is a Czech-American originally from Prague, now based in New York City. He earned his undergraduate degree in Modern Culture and Media from Brown University, followed by studies in film production at FAMU International in Prague. Bruce works professionally across PR, marketing, and production, with a focus on culture and the arts. He is passionate about photography, translation, and film—dedicated to sharing human experiences through inventive and meaningful forms of communication.
