Often traced to the country’s centuries-old puppet-theater tradition, Czech animation has long stood apart for its craftsmanship, imagination, and singular sense of the surreal. From the postwar golden age to the present day, Czech filmmakers have produced some of the most distinctive animated works in world cinema.
The Weird and Wonderful World of Czech Animation, presented by Metrograph in partnership with the Czech Center New York, surveys this rich lineage—from the lyrical, handcrafted films of Hermína Týrlová and the fantastical cinematic worlds of Karel Zeman to the darkly playful surrealism of Jiří Barta and Jan Švankmajer.
The series also turns to the present, spotlighting contemporary artists who continue to expand the possibilities of animation. A special program highlights the work of Michaela Pavlátová, pairing her Golden Bear–winning short Repete with the César Award–winning animated feature My Sunny Maad. Director Daria Kashcheeva, recipient of a Student Academy Award for Daughter, will also appear to present a selection of recent Czech animated shorts and discuss her work.
