Czech Center New York presents a reading and conversation with author Bianca Bellová and Alex Zucker, U.S. translator of her dystopian page-turner The Lake, a winner of the EU Prize for Literature and Magnesia Litera Book of the Year in 2017. Adrian T. Bell, musician and husband of Bianca Bellová, will add a musical touch to the evening.
Now available in English, The Lake (Parthian Books) is the coming-of-age tale of an orphan named Nami, growing up in a fishing village somewhere in the former Soviet empire. When Nami crosses the lake to the city in search of his mother, he encounters a society on the verge of collapse. Combining a no-frills yet evocative style with a dexterous use of symbolism, Bellová’s tightly knit narrative leaves a lasting impact. Books will be available for purchase at the event.
