Czech visual artist and sculptor Erika Velická comes to New York for an artist residency at e-flux, supported by the Czech Center New York.
Velická’s practice brings together sculpture, installation, and spatial thinking, using traditional materials and processes to create complex environments shaped by both personal and collective narratives. Working with materials such as concrete, metal, and clay, she explores how spaces are constructed, how materials carry histories and undergo transformation, and how relationships emerge between objects, environments, and the people who inhabit them.
A recurring aspect of her work is the idea of feminist monumentality—an approach to sculpture that moves away from dominance and permanence toward openness, horizontality, shared experience, and dialogue. Rather than creating monuments that impose a single narrative, Velická develops spaces and objects that invite encounter, participation, and multiple interpretations.
Her residency in New York offers an opportunity to further develop these interests within the city’s distinct architectural, social, and artistic environment, while engaging with the international community surrounding e-flux.
Velická’s work has been presented in the Czech Republic and internationally, including at the 14th Shanghai Biennale, the m3 / Art in Space festival, and Donumenta in Regensburg.
Since 2024, Erika Velická has co-led the Sculpture 1 Studio at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague (AVU) together with artist David Fesl. She is also pursuing doctoral studies at the Faculty of Fine Arts, Brno University of Technology (FaVU VUT).
