The Czech Center New York is pleased to announce that Czech artist Jiří Pitrmuc has been selected for a residency at Flux Factory, one of New York’s most vibrant experimental art spaces. This international residency is aimed at emerging artists in the early stages of their careers, offering time and space for focused artistic development as well as opportunities to build international connections.
The resident was chosen through nominations by the Studio of Fine Arts at UMPRUM (Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague), with the final selection made by a five-member jury: Dominik Lang (UMPRUM), Nat Roe and Susanne Katz (Flux Factory), Tereza Porybná (Czech Center New York), and Amalie Bulandrová (UMPRUM).
Jiří Pitrmuc holds a Master’s degree in Intermedia Art from the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, where he studied under Pavla Sceranková and Dušan Zahoranský. Prior to that, he focused on performance art under Jiří Kovanda at the Faculty of Art and Design, UJEP in Ústí nad Labem. His education also includes international study stays at LUCA School of Arts in Brussels and the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague. Since 2023, he has been teaching and assisting in the Studio of Object–Space–Action at UJEP and is currently pursuing a PhD at UMPRUM. He is also an active member of the Skutek collective, which advocates for better working conditions in the cultural sector.
During his stay at Flux Factory, Jiří will use the studio and workshop facilities to develop a new body of paintings and sculptural objects. Selected works from this new series will be featured in the upcoming group exhibition Sentiments/Sediments, organized by the Czech Center New York in September 2025.
The residency also includes a networking program, allowing Jiří to meet with New York-based curators, arts organizations, and fellow artists. Through this, he will gain deeper insights into the local independent and commercial art scenes and explore new opportunities for collaboration.
Jiří Pitrmuc’s residency is part of the Czech Center New York’s long-term mission to support emerging talents and foster meaningful dialogue between the Czech and American art worlds.
Flux Factory is an artist-led space that builds sustainable communities and retains creative vitality in NYC. Founded in 1994 by a group of artists in response to the need for affordable work space, Flux has hosted over 300 Artists-in-Residence, both local and international, and staged over 700 exhibitions and events across all disciplines. Flux’s home at two locations in Long Island City is a creative hive that incubates experimentation with collaborative processes. Flux annually hosts over 75 annual multidisciplinary events; all are free to the public while all participating artists are compensated.
