On Friday, June 13, Bohemian National Hall hosted a performance of Kafka’s Ape, a solo theatrical adaptation of Franz Kafka’s A Report to an Academy. Adapted by Phala Ookeditse Phala and performed by Tony Miyambo, the production reimagines Kafka’s story in a South African context, exploring themes of identity, adaptation, and survival in a post-apartheid world.
Through the character of Red Peter, an ape recounting his journey of becoming “human,” the performance raised questions about assimilation and the tension between self and other. Miyambo’s portrayal emphasized both the physical and emotional aspects of this transformation, offering the audience a focused and thought-provoking experience.
The hour-long show, performed in English, was followed by a discussion with the artists, where audience members had the opportunity to ask questions and engage with the ideas behind the adaptation. The conversation touched on the creative process, the cultural context of the performance, and its ongoing international reception.
