On Sunday, June 8, audiences at Bohemian National Hall had the chance to experience Erben: Vlasy, a visually imaginative puppet theater production by the Hura Kolektiv. Presented as part of the Rehearsal for Truth theater festival, the performance was offered twice in the evening and followed by a demonstration of puppetry techniques and history.
Directed and performed by Hza Bažant and Leona Bažant Telínová, Vlasy is part of a trilogy of dark adaptations of fairy tales by K. J. Erben. The story centers on a king whose obsession with hunting leads him to commit a series of grim acts in pursuit of an eternal chase. Though wordless, the 35-minute performance used shadow play, expressive puppetry, and a unique soundscape created with quills and chimes to build a vivid and eerie atmosphere.
Blending the tradition of family puppet theater with contemporary visual design, the production appealed to both children and adults. The post-show segment offered insight into the craft of puppetry, inviting audience members to take a closer look at the materials, mechanics, and creative approaches behind the scenes.
