As per tradition, the Czech Center New York has once again hosted Films on the Roof this summer. This year’s selection, in honor of the Year of Czech Music 2024, explored themes of music and cultural identity through three unique genres: a musical parody, a pseudodocumentary (or mockumentary), and a documentary in the style of cinéma vérité.
This August, Films on the Roof of the Bohemian National Hall captivated and entertained diverse audiences, peaking their cultural curiosity in the soothing summer twilight. Thank you to everyone who attended our screenings!
Films on the Roof kicked off with the legendary Czech comedy Lemonade Joe (1964), an iconic musical parody of the American Western written by Jiří Brdečka and directed by Oldřich Lipský.
Next was the mysterious black comedy Year of the Devil (2002), which follows the musical and spiritual journey of Jaromír Nohavica, Karel Plíhal, the band Čechomor, and other artists in a mockumentary style directed by Petr Zelenka.
The series concluded with Miloš Forman’s directorial debut in collaboration with Ivan Passer, the documentary double feature Audition (1964), consisting of Audition and If there were no music.
