This week Czech artist Michael Krondl will present "Tide", his new installation piece part of this year's Art on the Edge exhibition. Join him next week as he discusses climate change along with fellow artists and activists.
Michael Krondl is a Czech-born, New York-based installation artist known for his site-specific works that utilize photographs of natural fragments or local environments. He manipulates these images through both digital and analog methods to create large-scale installations, which are mounted on walls, billboards, screens, and even floors, transforming the surrounding space and architecture. Many of his pieces address pressing environmental issues and the climate emergency.
As part of Climate Week NYC, Waterfront Alliance’s 2024 Climate Art Panel features Michael Krondl alongside other Art at the Edge artists and Carly Foster, a climate resilience planner. Krondl's work explores our troubled relationship with the natural world, particularly the consequences of the climate crisis, focusing on water and drought.
“Tide” introduces a virtual crevice into Pier 16, making it appear as though the East River is spilling over the dock—an inevitable result of rising sea levels. Viewers must cross this break in time to engage physically with the artwork.
While addressing the climate crisis, Krondl seeks visceral, personal reactions from viewers rather than rational responses, aiming to create an intersection of the somatic and conceptual where human vulnerability becomes an immediate danger.
