Last night, the Czech Center New York hosted a dazzling performance by the illustrious dramatic soprano Eliška Weissová, a soloist from the Wiener Staatsoper and a rising star on the Czech opera scene. This concert, part of the Year of Czech Music 2024 series, left the audience in awe with its blend of emotive vocals and masterful piano accompaniment by the renowned David Kalhous.
Eliška Weissová captivated the audience with her powerful and expressive voice, delivering breathtaking renditions of Dvořák's Biblical Songs and a selection of arias ranging from Janáček to Mascagni to Verdi to Smetana. Her performance showcased not only her technical prowess but also her deep emotional connection to the music, leaving a lasting impression on everyone present.
David Kalhous complemented Weissová’s vocals with his exceptional piano skills, adding depth and nuance to the performance. His ability also shone through solo pieces. His interpretations of Janáček and Miloslav Kabeláč were both bold and intricate, demonstrating his wide-ranging repertoire and adventurous programming.
