Czech Center New York took part in "Pysanka: A Symbol of Hope", a project of Sofika Zielyk, a Ukrainian ethnographer and artist, who chose the art of painting Easter eggs as a form of protest against the war in Ukraine.
The participatory exhitibion of Ukrainian Easter eggs "The Pysanka: a Symbol of Hope" by Sofika Zielyk uses the traditional communal painting of Easter eggs as a means of showing unity, and at the same time a symbol of life and rebirth to express hope for the future of Ukraine, being destructed by the current war.
The initiative organized by the Ukrainian Institute of America and the World Federation of Ukrainian Women's Organization encourages children and adults of all backgrounds, beliefs and ages to enrich the living installation of pysanky (plural of pysanka) by contributing their own egg, hand decorated using traditional Ukrainian techniques and motifs. In this way, the installation keeps growing in size as well as its symbolic power.
Miroslav Konvalina, the director of Czech Center New York, Ivana Andersen, the program manager, and Tereza Gastová participated in painting Easter eggs together with other colleagues from the European National Institutes for Culture (EUNIC Cluster) New York.
