Designers Eduard Herrmann and Matěj Coufal were awarded as Grand Designers of the Year, the top prize of the evening at the prestigious Czech Grand Design awards 2020. Next month they will present their work during CLOSEUP, an event organized by ICFF and WantedDesign Manhattan, as a part of the ECO Solidarity project, brought to you by Czech Center New York in partnership with other EUNIC institutes of culture.

Danica Kovářová, the Czech member of the ECO Solidarity Advisory Committee, which chose the projcts to be presented at the virtual fair and trade show CLOSEUP, on Herrmann & Coufal's award:

I am very happy that when judging the DIY project of the Herrmann & Coufal designer tandem, our jury took the same view as the Czech Grand Design Academy. The project, together with their Capsule lamps designed for the Czech brand, LUCIS, and the Rolleta furniture connection made for Futuro, earned them the 2020 Designer of the Year award just a few days ago. And that is not all: Eduard and Matěj also took the Grand Designer of the Year prize and became this year’s overall winners across eight categories! Congratulations, and we will be curious to follow the journey of the DIY project. Herrmann & Coufal are now developing ready-made kits which will include all the components required to make lamps in a single box. Good news for those of us who do not enjoy browsing DIY shops as much as these two guys!
