Czech artist Valentýna Janů arrives in New York as an artist in residence at ISCP. The residency is supported by the Czech Center New York.
Valentýna Janů, recipient of the Other Visions Award at PAF Olomouc and the Jindřich Chalupecký Award, works across installation, film, and performance. Her works combine hopeful narratives with reflective essays, posing fundamental questions about life through scenic environments often accompanied by moving image. Drawing on motifs from popular culture, Janů creates unexpected social fantasies while exploring the tension between stereotype and archetype, free choice and cliché.
During her two-month residency at ISCP in New York, Valentýna Janů will focus on the development and production of her new film Darklings, co-produced by Mannschaft, as well as on a new performance. The film further develops her long-term interest in darkness as an ambivalent space associated with fear and uncertainty, but also with the possibility of emancipation, anonymity, and alternative forms of bodily and social freedom.
The residency will also include ongoing work-in-progress presentations and open studio visits, taking place as part of the Open House on July 22.
