Curator Eva Skopalová of the National Gallery Prague will undertake a research residency at the Czech Center New York focused on international networks of Czechoslovak art from 1948 to 1989.
The Czech Center New York, in collaboration with the National Gallery Prague, presents a research residency by curator Eva Skopalová, taking place from July 15 to 22. Her research focuses on Czechoslovak art beyond the borders of Czechoslovakia between 1948 and 1989.
The project explores how artists living and working abroad remained connected to one another and to their homeland, and how they participated in international artistic networks. It focuses on the broader political, social, and cultural conditions that shaped artistic mobility, cross-border exchange, and the international visibility of Czechoslovak art.
Special attention is given to the periods after 1948 and 1968, when Western Europe, the United States, and Canada became important centers of Czechoslovak artistic emigration. New York emerged as one of the key hubs in this network, linked to figures such as Andy Warhol, Thomas Messer, Alexander Hammid, Bob Krčil, Stano Filko, and Eva Fuka.
During the residency, Skopalová will visit major New York institutions and archives, including the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum Archives, the New York Public Library, and the Isamu Noguchi Foundation Archives.
Eva Skopalová, Ph.D., is a curator in the Collection of Art after 1945 at the National Gallery Prague, where she has worked since 2021. She co-curated and contributed to the permanent exhibition 1939–2021: The End of the Black-and-White Era at the Trade Fair Palace. Her research focuses on affect theory, the history of emotions, and nonlinear temporality in art history. She held fellowships at EHESS in Paris and New York University’s Institute of Fine Arts as a Fulbright Fellow. Her curatorial projects include Formosa deformitas, Heptameron, and Silent Spring.
