Czech photographer Libuše Jarcovjáková arrives in New York as an artist in residence with the Residency Unlimited program. The residency is initiated by the Czech Center New York.
Libuše Jarcovjáková, a leading figure in Czech photography, will spend several weeks in New York as an artist in residence with Residency Unlimited. During her stay, she will focus on developing her current work while connecting with the local art scene.
Her residency was preceded by her participation in the group exhibition Autofictions at Candice Madey (April 18 – May 22, 2026, 1 Rivington Street, New York), where she exhibited alongside Darrel Ellis, Abby Robinson, Gail Thacker, and Ann Weathersby.
As part of her residency, Libuše Jarcovjáková will join Petra Janda and other RU artists for an evening of conversation, performance, and a rooftop gathering at the Bohemian National Hall titled Belonging and Becoming.

Libuše Jarcovjáková (b. 1952, Prague) is a leading Czech photographer whose raw visual diary captures life under socialism, the queer underground, and intimate personal moments. Raised in an artistic family, she discovered photography as a teenager and studied at FAMU, developing a bold black-and-white style focused on marginalized communities, nightlife, and her own experiences. Her work gained renewed international attention with the Academy Award–nominated documentary I’m Not Everything I Want to Be (dir. Klára Tasovská, 2024) and the acclaimed book Evokativ (Untitled, 2019), whose exhibition at Les Rencontres d’Arles and nominations for the Paris Photo Aperture PhotoBook Awards and Deutsche Börse Photography Prize cemented her global reputation. Honored as Photographer of the Year, Book of the Year, and named Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 2022, she leads the Department of Photography at the Ladislav Sutnar Faculty of Art and Design in Pilsen. Her latest book, Supersonico² (Untitled, 2025), continues her tender, profoundly human exploration of contemporary life.
