Highlights from the National Gallery Prague

The Czech Centres and the National Gallery Prague (NGP) present their joint project Highlights from the National Gallery Prague introducing selected works from the NGP collections in eleven videos. This cooperation was initiated by the Czech Centres seeking a succinct and visually powerful online project related to visual arts and the Czech milieu. The CC, therefore, invited the NGP to become a partner in a project introducing a representative selection of artworks from the NGP collections, displaying rich and diverse creations of Czech artists and outstanding works closely linked to the local cultural milieu. All the episodes are presented by art historian Veronika Wolf.

Join us this summer in watching the video series Highlights from the National Gallery Prague. The first part was released in our blog on Tuesday, July 6, and is followed by new episodes every Tuesday and Thursday till August 10. CCNY also prepares accompanying presentations during the summer in which participants will be able to meet and discuss the topic of Czech art with the creators of the series, such as art historian Veronika Wolf in the event Lights, camera, action! on July 8th and Zoom talk about Toyen and Czech Surrealism with Karla Huebner, professor of Art and Art History at Wright State University on August 5.

WATCH: Charles IV. and the Votive Panel of Jan Očko of Vlašim...

The series will introduce, among others, a valuable panel painting dating back to Emperor Charles IV´s reign, Emperor Rudolph II´s favorite works and artists, and internationally renowned Czech artists who lived at the end of the 19th and in the first half of the 20th century. As a partner of the project, the NGP was in charge of the entire curatorial concept and the realization of the videos directed by Marco Chiodi. Chiodi studied visual arts at a university in Venice and spent long periods of time working in Tokyo and Hong Kong. Besides the NGP, Chiodi also cooperates with the Ballet and Opera Ensembles of the National Theatre in Prague and with the Italian Cultural Institute.

All the episodes are presented by art historian Veronika Wolf who graduated in the History of Art from Palacky University Olomouc. She also studied Italian art at Ca’ Foscari University in Venice and art law at the Sotheby’s Institute of Art in London. She has previously worked at the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice, lived for several years in London and, prior to joining the National Gallery Prague as Director of External Affairs, was Director of The Lobkowicz Collections in Prague. Veronika has given lectures at universities in London and Paris, and at museums in Berlin, Moscow, and Singapore.

The National Gallery Prague holds the largest art collection in the Czech Republic. In its six buildings it presents works of art ranging from the Middle Ages, Renaissance, and Baroque up to the modern and contemporary periods. The project Highlights from the National Gallery Prague aims to show the richness and diversity of works of art by Czech artists and also works of art connected with the Czech cultural milieu.
