Artist in Residence: Anna Černíková

Czech interdisciplinary artist Anna Černíková will take part in a residency at Flux Factory in New York from September 1 to 21, 2026.

Her practice brings together moving image, music, performance, and installation. Exploring shifting identities, embodiment, and cultural memory, she examines how our sense of self is shaped by media, social norms, and systems of power. Her work moves between dream and reality, documentary and fiction, often drawing on lo-fi aesthetics, glitch, and the visual language of television. Černíková graduated from UMPRUM in Prague in 2025 and also creates and performs music under the name A/C.

During the residency, she will develop Daydream Nation, a project that explores daydreaming as a space for imagination, rest, and escape from the pressures of constant productivity and digital stimulation. Against the backdrop of New York, she will investigate what forms of dreaming, distraction, and mental retreat can survive in a city where ideals of freedom collide with the realities of contemporary capitalism and a culture of control.

Her field research will include filming the Statue of Liberty from different perspectives and recording the sounds of the city. The collected material will form the basis of an experimental video essay centered on an imagined inner monologue of the Statue of Liberty. The project will also include an illustrated diary, a short zine, and a concluding workshop exploring daydreaming as both a creative and critical practice.

Organized in partnership with the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague (UMPRUM).
