Czech Center New York presents a project ANTHROPOCENE – INVISIBLE CHANGES, dedicated to the topic of GEOCHRONOLOGY and mapping how humanity globally affects the terrestrial ecosystem. The cultural collaborative exchange exhibition with visual artists from Czech Republic and the United States of America, made in collaboration with Galerie kritiků in Prague, Czech Republic, will take place in Front Room Gallery in Hudson from January 21 until February 19, 2023.
Featuring artists: Sasha Bezzubov, Pamela Longobardi, Stephen Mallon, Lucie Svoboda Mičíková, Edita Pattová, Jan Pfeiffer, Petra Gupta Valentová, Kathleen Vance
Guest speakers will include Pamela Longobardi, Stephen Mallon, Petra Gupta Valentová, and Kathleen Vance.
Introductory presentation of a cultural exchange exhibition with artists from the Czech Republic and artists from the United States presented in exchange with Galerie kritiků, Prague, Czech Republic. This presentation precedes an exhibition at the Front Room Gallery, Hudson, NY, which will open on Saturday, January 21, 2023. The project was first introduced at the Galerie kritiku in Prague in the Summer of 2022. With introductory remarks by Petra Gupta Valentová and Kathleen Vance.
Pamela Longobardi will be discussing Drifters Project in which she channeled her lifelong love of Ocean into artistic practices transforming mountains of ocean plastic debris from beaches around the world into meticulous installations and monumental sculptures. Working collaboratively with global communities, cleaning beaches, converting plastic to art that sheds unflinching light on human consumption’s aftermath.
In conjunction with this project, artist Pamela Longobardi will present a book release and signing of her new book “Ocean Gleaning.”
Stephen Mallon will be discussing his photographic series, “Next Stop Atlantic” which follows an MTA recycling program which uses retired subways cars, stripped and cleaned, to rebuild underwater reefs along the Eastern coast of the United States. Mallon will be speaking about his process and concepts included in this project as well as “American Reclamation” which captures images of industrial recycling in US, and his most recent series, of photographs, “Passing Freight” which documents the still operational freight rail cars in the United States.
Petra Gupta Valentová will discuss her series of mental maps, created with hand embroideries on cotton canvas with natural dyes (woodblock print, blue print) and hand drawings on archival paper (acrylic, ink, archival pen). The series works with invisible processes around and inside us and reflects the author's outer and inner world. In psychology, mental maps are described as mental representations of the world, based on subjective perceptions and including positive and negative feelings of an individual from a certain place and environment. She will also introduce the work of the Czech artists participating in the exhibition.
Kathleen Vance will be discussing her series, “Traveling Landscapes,” her artistic process, and development of environmental sculptures and installations. Her work explores concepts of displacement, our relationship with the natural environment., and environmental issues such as water conservation and protection through positive stewardship of the land.
